A Campbell, Ohio Cemetery Gets Some Much Needed Help, Just In Time for Memorial Day

After some years of neglect, a local non-profit organization pitches in to revitalize a historic cemetery, which contains local war veterans from five wars. A weekend in May is planned for the public to help.

Campbell, Ohio April 27, 2008 -- The Pioneer Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, located in Campbell, Ohio, is a 169 year-old place of interment for local veterans that fought in the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I & II, and the Vietnam War. The cemetery is under the care of “The Pioneer Methodist Cemetery Revitalization Project,” which is giving the neglected cemetery some much needed care and preservation.

The aging cemetery is under the ownership of the City of Campbell, but does not care for the cemetery. It has been over 30 years since the last revitalization effort by the Campbell Bicentennial Committee in 1976, which straightened and leveled tombstones, and conducted routine maintenance of the cemetery.

Some tombstones have been completely obliterated, while others, like some Civil War soldier markers, are close to this stage of decay. Others have been “upgraded” or replaced by concerned citizens or family members. The organization is also petitioning the State of Ohio to add the cemetery to its register of historic places.

The Pioneer Methodist Cemetery Revitalization Project is conducting a “Clean-Up Day” on May 17-18, starting at 9:00 a.m. at the cemetery, located at the corner of Struthers-Liberty Road and US-422 in Campbell Ohio. The general public and any family of the departed are encouraged to participate. Directions are located at http://www.thepioneermethodistcemetery.com.

This latest effort by Dave Shacklock, President of the Pioneer Methodist Cemetery Revitalization Project, is the third effort of an organization to care for this cemetery. According to Mr. Shacklock, "We have veterans of almost every war... We need to make this a place that the veterans of our country deserve, and right now, it looks terrible."

About The Pioneer Methodist Revitalization Project:

The Pioneer Methodist Revitalization Project is a non-profit organization, dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of a 169 year-old cemetery. This organization is guided by the principle of restoring the dignity and respect that our ancestors and veterans deserve.  We do this by attempting to mend the effects of age and neglect to which this historic place of interment has fallen, and hope to preserve a piece of our local genealogical history.
